A recent investigation has revealed that fraudsters in Mityana district used abused dogs to collect billions of shillings from foreign donors through fake online rescue campaigns. Reports show that over Shs 2.7 billion was raised using emotional videos shared on TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.Investigators discovered that some so-called rescue shelters kept dogs in poor conditions and allegedly injured animals to attract sympathy and donations. One widely shared dog named “Russet” appeared in several fundraising campaigns, even though little help was given to the animal.Animal rights activists have condemned the cruelty and called for stronger government action against the scam. Authorities in Mityana previously rescued injured dogs and arrested suspects linked to similar operations.
