Mulago National Referral Hospital

Mulago National Referral Hospital has wrapped up a free breast reconstruction camp, restoring dignity to over 20 women who lost their breasts to cancer. Dr. Irene Asaba Mugisha, head of Plastic Surgery, says many survivors didn’t know reconstruction was possible. Private surgeries cost up to 15 million shillings, but Mulago offered the procedures at no cost. The camp also helped men with feminine breasts. However, Dr. Mugisha warns that breastfeeding may not always be possible after surgery. With only two of six consultants available, the unit remains stretched thin despite rising demand.
