Uganda — Ugandan comedian and actress Anne Kansiime has stirred public debate after revealing that she once paid her own dowry during a previous relationship. In a recent interview, Kansiime disclosed that her former partner did not fulfill the cultural obligation of paying bride price to her family. Under pressure to meet societal expectations, she said she quietly took on the responsibility herself.“I wanted things to look right and be accepted,” she said, explaining that at the time she believed the decision would help sustain the relationship. In many Ugandan cultures, dowry—commonly referred to as bride price—is traditionally paid by the groom to the bride’s family as a sign of appreciation and commitment. Kansiime’s revelation challenges this long-standing practice and has drawn mixed reactions from the public. Some social media users expressed sympathy, pointing to the pressure women face to uphold cultural norms, while others criticized the situation as a reflection of deeper issues in relationships and societal expectations.Kansiime described the experience as a difficult chapter in her life, saying it felt like “living a lie.” The relationship later ended, and she now regards the incident as a lesson learned. The entertainer added that she is currently in a better place and has since found a more supportive partner. Her remarks have reignited conversations about gender roles, cultural traditions, and the changing dynamics of modern relationships in Uganda.—G9 News Desk
