Kiboga Police Arrest Eight Over Attempted Child Marriage

By Faith Kwagala

Police in Kiboga District have arrested eight suspects for attempting to marry off a 15-year-old Senior Three student.
The operation, conducted in Kagoga Village, followed a tip-off that a “giveaway” ceremony was underway. Officers moved in before the ritual could be concluded.
Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, identified the victim as a student at Bukomero Secondary School, born December 6, 2010. She is legally a minor, as Uganda’s marriage age is 18.
Those arrested include the girl’s parents, the groom, and his parents. Exhibits recovered include sugar, rice, soap, meat, two kanzus, and three gomesi.
The suspects face charges of defilement and procuring defilement. The case file has been submitted to the Resident State Attorney for sanctioning.
Authorities warn that child marriage disrupts education and exposes children to exploitation.
