President Yoweri Museveni has defended the recently passed sovereignty bill by warning against foreign interference in Uganda’s affairs. In a statement shared on X, Museveni congratulated NRM MPs for passing the bill, saying it aims to protect Uganda from outside political influence.Museveni linked his argument to the 1971 coup that brought Idi Amin to power, claiming Israel and Britain supported the overthrow of former president Apollo Milton Obote because of Obote’s position on Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. He said Uganda suffered years of conflict due to external involvement and urged citizens to remember the country’s history while debating the bill. Critics, however, argue the proposed law could limit civil society activities and freedom of dissent.
