Veteran Ugandan musician and lawyer Sylver Kyagulanyi has called on filmmakers to take control of their intellectual property as Uganda’s film industry continues to grow. Speaking at the Ikonversations session hosted by Reach A Hand Uganda in Lungujja, Kyagulanyi emphasized that creativity alone is not enough without understanding the business and legal side of the industry. He explained key aspects of intellectual property, highlighting copyright as essential for protecting original work, alongside trademarks and patents.Kyagulanyi also urged creatives to view licensing as a source of income, noting that it can open opportunities for merchandising, adaptations, and commercial use of their work. He warned against signing away rights in exchange for short-term financial gain, advising filmmakers to opt for non-exclusive agreements where possible.
