Researchers in Uganda are raising concern over new findings linking maize farming near homes to increased malaria risk. A study led by Makerere University School of Public Health shows that mosquito numbers rise during maize growing seasons, especially in the evening. Experts say stagnant water, poor storage, and outdoor farming activities create breeding grounds and increase exposure. Health officials warn that current control methods, such as treated nets, may not fully address outdoor transmission. The study, discussed in Kampala, calls for new policies that consider farming practices and community livelihoods to better control malaria in affected areas nationwide.
