Makerere University has suspended the controversial 5% surcharge on late tuition payments for the current semester following concerns raised by Guild President Gracious Kadondi over students’ financial hardships. The decision was communicated in a letter signed by Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Sarah N. Ssali after consultations with university leadership. Earlier, the university had warned students that failure to clear tuition balances would lead to deregistration, denial of examination permits and the surcharge on outstanding balances.Kadondi appealed to the university management, saying many students were struggling financially due to economic hardships affecting families and sponsors.Despite the waiver, the university maintained that students must fully clear tuition balances before sitting examinations, progressing academically or graduating.
